After years of battle, Utsopi achieved a historic victory on March 18: the decriminalization of sex work in Belgium. The full criminalisation of the sex work sector is over. It will be possible to take more effective action against human trafficking and abuse. Sex workers will have the same rights as the rest of the population. Discrimination will come to an end.
This was only the first step. Utsopi is now in talks with sex workers, managers, ministers and experts to work out a labour law for the sector: how do we ensure that sex workers work in hygienic, safe and healthy conditions? That they have the right to vacation, sick leave and pension? Even though these rights seem only logical to us, there are forces in society that continue to oppose them. This is a very important, difficult, but certainly not impossible task.
As things are at the moment, however, it is uncertain whether Utsopi will make it to the fall. After the loss of crisis funding during the pandemic, we are very much underfunded for the task at hand. That’s why we need your support.
Please support us. With your support, we can make sure that we continue to be a place where sex workers can come to with their questions, where we get to know each other, where we can get legal advice, while enabling labor rights for sex workers in our country. Not coincidentally, we are launching this campaign on May 1, International Labor Day.
Help us make labor rights for sex workers possible. Support Utsopi.
